When And Why You Stop Oral Steroids

Steroids are known to treat many diseases such as asthma and allergies. It is also known to have many side effects such as suffering from headache, increase in the blood pressure or sugar level in the blood, mood changes etc. When people realise these side effects or see that they are affected by the side effects of these Orale Steroide, most of them tend to stop it immediately. Steroids are organic chemical compounds comprising of 3 fused benzene rings fused together and arranged in a specific order. They are often taken as drugs for therapeutic and pharmaceutical purposes and are called Anabolic Androgenic Steroids in the US.

Do Not Stop Suddenly

The most common suggestion given to a person using steroids is that not to stop using these steroids suddenly. It is no harm when you forget a dosage. The sudden stopping is not suggested because it can cause withdrawal effects on the body. These withdrawal effects are generally seen within few days once you stop using the steroids. It is generally suggested to reduce the dosage before suddenly stopping the steroid altogether. Your doctor would be the best person who can help you in reducing the dosage and finally to stop them.

Reducing the Dosage

As said above, it is necessary that you reduce the dosage as suggested by your doctor before completely stopping the steroids. This is because to allow the body to adjust. In general when you don’t take steroids, your body is capable of producing steroid chemicals on its own. These chemical steroids are necessary for you to be healthy. Now since you have started taking steroids for more than a few weeks, your body might have stopped or at least reduced the quantity that chemical steroid is produced. Now, if you suddenly stop taking the Orale Steroide, your body would be deprived of the steroids. This will cause the withdrawal symptoms till your body starts producing the steroid again. The withdrawal effects can be serious in some case. Few cases have had the life threatening too. Other common effects found are weakness or tiredness, vomiting, pain in the abdomen, lower blood sugar or lower blood pressure, diarrhoea and many more. Patients have also faced fainting or collapsing in some cases.

Steroids are prescribed externally for allergic reactions, inhaled for asthma and injected for joint and muscle problems. Some people also take steroids orally for other medical reasons, wherein the steroid is absorbed and settled throughout the body by the blood stream. However, when systematic steroids are used, any infection must be thoroughly checked and treated properly since it suppresses the immune system.

By reducing the dosage in the initial days would allow your body to generate or produce the deficient steroids that your body is required. This is similar to the way any vehicle is brought to rest. You do not suddenly put a break and stop of all a sudden in which case there can be accidents causing a huge risk to the life. Hence just like bringing the vehicle from top gear to lower gears before stopping the vehicle, it is necessary that you reduce the dosage before completely stopping it.
