Cancer Awareness: Health Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

There is little doubt that spotting the early signs and symptoms of cancer is a crucial aspect of being able to survive any subsequent affirmative diagnosis that you receive.

An early cancer diagnosis could certainly be a life-saver and although you can learn about being compensated if you suffer from medical negligence such as being misdiagnosed and other scenarios, it obviously make sound sense if you improve your own awareness of the health symptoms that you should never ignore.

Persistent coughing

We all tend to have a bout of coughing at some point or another but if the cough is persistent and doesn’t seem to be going away, it should not be ignored.

If the cough is accompanied by some blood at the same time, that is a symptom that you should definitely check with your doctor as soon as possible.

If there are any concerns, you may be referred for a chest x-ray or CT scan, so that an evaluation can made whether you might have lung cancer or any other complications that need urgent attention.

Bowel movements

Not everyone is going to feel comfortable with talking to their doctor about their bowel movements but you have to overcome any potential embarrassment factor for the sake of your future health.

If you notice a change in your bowel movements such as having greater difficulty passing stools or they appear larger than normal or an irregular shape, this should be discussed with your doctor.

Any stool deformity or problems going to the toilet could potentially be an indication of a mass impeding the journey of the stool from the bowel. This would need to be checked with a colonoscopy to confirm or deny any suspicion of a cancerous mass forming.

Check your moles

Moles are of course commonplace and whilst the appearance of a new mole or a change in the appearance of an existing mole is not an indication of melanoma, you should be pro-active about checking your body regularly and consult your doctor or a dermatologist if you believe something is not right.

The Skin Cancer Foundation offers you the chance to download a Self-Exam Body Map which can help you to learn what to look out for and record any changes so that you have a schedule of changes to refer to.

Weight loss

Whilst some weight loss is often welcomed if we are dieting, unexplained weight loss is a different matter altogether and should be investigated urgently.

If you find that you are starting to lose weight consistently without actually making an effort to diet or making significant changes in your lifestyle, this could be a warning of a potentially serious medical condition such as malignancy or it could be indicative of a tumour.

Persistent pain

A difficult symptom to get right is persistent pain.

It has to be stressed that most pain is not a sign that you have cancer but experiencing persistent pain which does not want to go away, should certainly be an issue that you raise with your doctor for some reassurance.

Self-awareness of some of the main symptoms that could possibly mean you have cancer is critical to your long-term health and even survival, so don’t ignore any concerns that you have.
