Actually, the doctor/patient relationship is vital in health care. It plays a crucial role in determining the quality of health care and in boosting patients’ satisfaction. If a doctor and a patient have a good relationship, the doctor is able to deliver top quality health care. Whether it is in term of diagnosing a disease or treating a disease, the doctor can give the best performance. The doctor can easily gather important data about patients, diagnose patients’ condition more accurately, and make a treatment plan more precisely. In a good doctor/patient relationship, a patient can receive health care that perfectly meets his needs. A patient’s dignity will be upheld and patient’s privacy will be respected.
Because the doctor/patient relationship is based on trust, the doctor is responsible to gain trust from his patients. When patients have already had trust in their doctor, they usually can cooperate with their doctors. Meaning to say, the chance to get the right diagnosis and to get recovered from a disease is higher. Bad communication often leads to disappointment, litigation and medical mistakes. It does not only influence the doctors and their patients but also influences the staffs. Bad communication can make doctors and staffs feel unsatisfied with their workplace in which this potentially influences the quality of their services. Doctors and staffs need to know the culture of their organization well so that they can give their best performance. Bad communication makes patients feel disappointed as they might not receive a solution that can really solve their condition. They might feel that their dignity is neglected and their privacy is disrespected.
Basically, in a relationship, communication is really crucial; it determines the quality of a relationship. To have a good doctor/patient relationship, there should be a good communication between a doctor and a patient. In this case, open and honest communication is highly recommended. To avoid dissatisfaction between a doctor and a patient, a doctor should be facilitated to seminars or training about how to have good communication skills.
No show appointments
When a patient has made an appointment with a doctor, he is expected to show up for the appointment. If a patient decides to miss an appointment, he actually starts building a bad doctor/patient relationship. An empty space in a schedule hurts doctors, especially private doctors economically.
